*Updated* DIY Dishwasher Detergent

Recently in my travels around bloggy-land, I read about people adding citric acid to their homemade dishwasher detergent powder. The recipes I saw were different than mine, but I decided to try it out. Since I did not have any citric acid, I used Kool-aid powder (I keep it on hand to make fruity playdough) because the first ingredient is citric acid. While mixing up a fresh batch of my regular recipe, I added 4 packets of Pink Lemonade Kool-aid.  After using it a few times, I have been impressed with the results.  I thought my dishwasher detergent worked well before, but it seems that the citric acid gives it the added boost that it needed.  Every thing has been turning out extremely clean and super shiny!  It also has the added benefit of smelling great!

Have you tried DIY dishwasher detergent?  What is your verdict so far?

  2. You can find fruit fresh in the produce section of most grocery stores. It is citric acid. Not sure how the cost compares to the kool-aid and I'm sure the smell won't be as yummy.

  3. Since you used the Kool-Aid, do you still need the vinegar in the rinse aid compartment?
