DIY Disinfectant

{Borax, Dr. Bronner's Liquid Peppermint Castille Soap, Vinegar, Tea Tree Oil, Lavendar Essential Oil}

Have you ever felt that your house was crawling with germs?  Yeah, well, that's how I felt yesterday!  With all the sickness that has been in our home lately, I had the urge to disinfect every hard surface possible!  Having just finished up my 7th Generation disinfectant spray a few days ago, I decided to just make my own.  I googled some recipes and after looking at dozens, I came up with this one.  Each of the ingredients shown above are proven to kill many different forms of bacteria.  Mixed together in proper amounts, they can together form a powerful disinfectant.  It's so great knowing that I can clean my home well without filling it with chemicals!

Thankfully, I had all the ingredients I needed on hand, but if you do not, these few things should not be difficult to find.  Borax has so many uses, I use it in many things like laundry soap and dishwasher detergent and you can find it at Walmart and chain grocery stores such as Ingles or Harris Teeter.  I bought my Dr.Bronners soap at a Trader Joes, but I have heard that they sell it at Target.  It is awesome stuff and will last you forever!!  (I take the label off of mine because, well, Dr. Bronner believed some wacky things and it's written on the bottle!)  Pharmaceutical grade Tea Tree Oil is now available at Walmart in the vitamin section for a very good price.  The uses for Tea Tree Oil are endless and it is a must have!  As for the Lavender Oil, it is widely available at health food stores, vitamin shops online or even craft stores.

DIY Disinfectant

1-Spray bottle
2 tsp. Borax
4 tbsp. Vinegar
1/4 tsp. Dr. Bronner's Castille Soap
20 drops Tea Tree Oil
10 drops Lavender Oil
3 cups hot water

Mix together in a spray bottle.  Shake before each use.

*When I purchase some Thyme Oil, I will be adding it to this solution.  Thyme is a powerful antibacterial and antiviral agent and is proven to kill many things including MRSA.  (You can read more about Thyme and other essential oils here.)

Now go clean something! =)
