We invite people into our home a lot. Sundays are especially busy. With open shelving, I love that people can see what they need and don't have to feel awkward and ask for it. If someone decides they want some coffee later they can just go grab a cup. Or a plate. Or whatever.
It simplifies things. And it's pretty. Pretty and simple. What's not to love?
What are your feelings about open shelving in your kitchen? Do you like seeing your dishes or are you happy to conceal the contents of your cupboards? Would you ever do away with some of your doors?
We have open shelving in our kitchen. For the most part I really like it. I like that I can always see what I'm looking for and never wonder if there is something hiding in the dark corners of a cabinet ;). It's funny you should say you enjoy it most for when you have company over. This is usually the only time I don't like it, because I am afraid it looks cluttered plus most of my dishes are mismatched. So thanks for showing me the positive side of things!
Virginia, I did have all open shelving on all my wall cabinets, but my hubby didn't like it. =) From our living room, if you are sitting on the couch, the cabinets are straight ahead across the bar. He felt like it made everything look too busy so we put doors on the side cabinets and left the middle one open.
To make it feel uncluttered, I just keep collecting cute white dishes at Goodwill and yardsales. Some are mismatched, but it works because they are the same color.
We do the exact same thing. The key is the color. If the dishes are all the same color it works. I also love the fact that I don't have to be in the kitchen to "direct" visitors.
